05-25-2026 - 6:20 AM - Good Morning! It’s Monday, Memorial Day. It’s a solemn day of remembrance to honor the military personnel who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. Even so, well-meaning but confused people across the USA will be wishing others a Happy Memorial Day while grilling hot dogs and burgers. I won’t be doing that, or anything else of importance today. My Folgers Black Silk coffee is ready.

--- 6:45 AM - According to Water Data for Texas, Wichita Falls reservoirs are: Arrowhead: 84.1% Kemp: 94.4% Kickapoo: 86.6%. Monitored Water Supply Reservoirs are 89.0% full. The City of Wichita Falls uses combined levels of Arrowhead and Kickapoo (85.35%) to determine drought stage.

--- 6:49 AM - ERCOT (Texas) snapshot of grid conditions - ERCOT reports that conditions are normal and there is enough power for current demand with an operating reserve of 8,251 Megawatts.

--- 7:30 AM - I began the Amateur (ham) Radio Parks on the Air® program in January, 2024. As of today, I have contacted operators at 684 unique state and federal parks. If you include duplicate contacts (same park, different operators), I have 740 contacts, all CW (Morse code). I participate only as a "hunter", and not an activator. While I might operate out of a state or federal park in the future, it will still be as a hunter, not an activator. So, how am I starting my day? CB Radio!

--- 8:02 AM - FEMA Daily Operations Briefing

--- 8:20 AM - I just read a story about a Michigan woman who was booked into jail while carrying an unopened bottle - 750 ml - of Cupcake Vineyards Pinot Grigio wine. Folks, it wasn’t in her hands.

--- 10:30 AM - CB Radio Channel 6 (the superbowl of CB Radio) is on fire this morning with operators getting on their kilowatt soapboxes and making their presence known. They're just having fun. Of course, there are occasional reports of a Channel 6 operator causing a neighbor's electronics to emit smoke. Most are running clean amplifiers. So far, no one is splattering this morning. If one moves in near me, we might have to have a talk, but I'll burn that bridge when I get to it. And remember, these operators will be among the few who can actually get messages across the country in the event of a national SHTF scenario. You know, one of those events where cell phones turn into paperweights.

4:24 PM - I contacted a station in Dry Tortugas National Park (US-0023) in Florida on 20 meters (14 MHz) CW (Morse code) in the Amateur (ham) Radio Parks on the Air® program.

--- 5:40 PM - I had a flashback to something that happened last summer. It was code practice time, and I was trying to decide which I liked better: the straight key or the iambic key. I had the Putikeeg straight key already plugged into the Yaesu 857D, so I put it in the "code practice mode" (sidetone but not transmitting), and proceeded to hammer away. I started sending text I was reading online, or just making up. I just happened to glance at the radio and realized it wasn't in code practice mode. I had been transmitting! I shut the radio down, closed the curtains, and hid under the bed. That's a lie, I can't fit under the bed!

--- 6:15 PM - These days, the term "wardriving" usually means the practice of driving around town looking for unsecured WiFi networks. Scanner radio enthusiasts were "wardriving" long before WiFi existed. Some scanner enthusiasts had high, tower-mounted antennas and could monitor activity miles away. Other scannists had to move themselves closer to the action. More!

--- 7:00 PM - I was scammed. I started watching the movie “Murder at the Presidio” to bring back memories of my time stationed there. It didn’t take long before I realized the movie wasn't filmed there. Every outdoor scene was foreign to me. I checked that it was filed in Canada. I guess that, since the Presidio was no longer an Army post in 2005, they didn’t want to bother with civilians all over the place. I did, however, enjoy the movie “The Presido”, starring Sean Connery. It was basically about my old unit there.
